The saying ‘to everything there is a first time’ should not be used as yardstick in the ongoing AFCON 2013 tournament as far as Ghana is concerned.
Ghana's 2-2 drawn game against their Congolese counterparts in the group B opener played at the Nelson Mandela stadium in Port Elizabeth has raised some eyebrows and i want to add my voice to it.
I believe football fellows will be on the same page with me as the stars in that particular duel though managed a drawn game however the Congolese lead by Mputu, Lua Lua, Mbokani were individually brilliant over the entire 90 minutes.
As I watched the game from afar the stars lacked quality, cohesion, poor marking, easily giving away passes, low recovery rate and the above Kwadwo Asamoah’s left foot back was totally a negative decision.
The Congolese predominantly foresaw the left foot back as a low point and did justice to that which unfortunately caused a large problem for the team.
I wonder why a left foot back like Harrison Afful came in as substitute for midfielder Kwadwo Asmoah who manned such a position.
Dilating on output, goalkeeper Fatau Dauda for the first time kept his composure, calmness and courage through out the game even though conceded two unquestionable goals. For this reason he deceiving another chance is okay by me.
The central pair of John Boye and Jerry Akaminko was a flop as they were greatly exploited by Laulua, Mbokani to create a an opportunity for Mputu to pull one back. In my view I would like to see Jonathan Mensah or Vorsah in the next game against Mali on Thursday.
It was fire on the mountain as far as the midfield was concerned. Wakasu Mubarak and Agyemang Badu did quite well but Derek Boateng looked so fatigued and flat-footed not even to say a bad day until Anthony Annan came on from the bench to substitute him. Still on this, Atsu was virtually missing in action (MIA) due to the role assigned to him on the left flanks.
In the course of the game the stars again lacked one exceptional player and Albert Adomah did not own up to that task.
For the strikers that least said about them is better and I know people would be contemplating about who should be or out of the team.
These agitations must not be raised rather let’s in our own encourage players so that they do not loose focus and hope.
But the team must lift up their game in the next match against Mali who won 1-0 against Niger.
Ghana needs a win and anything less than such expectation could spell doom for them on the backdrop of the outcome between DR Congo and Niger.
