Ghana
participated in the first International tournament of West African Judo
federation, Dubbed Tournoi International de l’ AFOAJ which came off in Lome.
In a communique issued by Mr. Patrick Johnson, Secretary-General of the Association he noted Ghana happens
to be the only member country that featured Judokas without a single
professional Judoka.
According to him during the maiden congress of the West African Judo Federation
was held at the Excellence Hotel in Lome-Togo on and was chaired by the president of Ghana Judo
Association, Mr. Emmanuel Tetteh,
who doubles the vice president of the Ecowas Judo federation in the absence of
the Substantive
President, Alhaji Dia of Senegal
"Ghana
registered 13 athletes who participated under 9 different weight categories in
both male and female divisions.
Four female judokas
participated under 52kg 57kg and 78kg weight categories and 9 male judokas
participated under 60, 66, 73, 81, 90 and plus 100 weight categories
respectively" he added.

Mr . Johnson revealed despite the
fact that the team did not receive any financial support from the ministry, the
athletes for the love of the country Ghana and the sport of Judo forgone all
their allowances to participate in the games to rise high the flag of Ghana at
the Ecowas games.
"As part of the aim of the Ecowas federations
to promote the sport of judo in the sub region, the Ghana Judo Association was
presented with Judo equipments (kimono) worth $ 7,000 dollars for participation
in the games" he stressed.
