ALL STARS FALL TO ASHANTIGOLD

 By Ebenezer Zor

A poor defensive set up punished Wa All Stars in the penultimate duel as they lost 1-0 to visiting team Ashanti gold at the Wa Park today in the 14th week of the Glo premiership.

Mohammed Yakubu's free header in the 10th minute of the first half shot his side into the lead increasing his goal tally to seven out of 14 matches.

Wa All Stars who could not afford to loose at home in the presence of their President Kwesi Nyantakyi played their hearts out but luck eluded them.

Both teams took the game on to each other, however Wa All Stars who had the better part squander away most of the glorious chance they came their way as they game went into recess.

Back from recess, All Stars made all the incursions in the second half but yet still could not the find the net.

After 90 minutes played with additional seven minutes fans were furious and agitated when a glaring chance befell in the dying ambiance of proceedings when one player one-on-one to Fatau Dauda in post for Ashantigold failed miserably to restore parity.

AFCON 2012 IN MEMORY LANE

By Ebenezer Zor (ezee)
Reigning African Champions, the Chipolopolos of Zambia
Feburary 12, 2012 will still hover around the minds of Africa and the Diaspora as the Chipolopolos of Zambia the underdogs defeated the Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire 8-7 on penalties to clinch the 28th edition of Africa’s most prestigious Orange African Cup of Nations (AFCON) co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in the grand finale played at in Libreville, Gabon.

The tournament which started on January 21 to February 12 saw 16 teams grouped into four to play 32 matches at four cities- Estadio de Bata, Nuevo Estadio de Malabo both in Equatorial Guinea and Stade d'Angondjé in Libreville,  Stade de Franceville both also in Gabon.

HOW ZAMBIA DID IT
On 27 April 1993, Zambia lost most players on board in those dark Gabonese skies over the Atlantic Ocean in Gabon of which Kalusha Bwalya was not part of the team as destiny separated him from such a menace.

“Go into the tournament and make your heroes, comrades and forefathers who suffered a plane crush some years back proud in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea”. These were some quotes from the former Zambia international and also FA President Kalusha Bwalya before the showdown to Coach Herve Renard and his charges. The words alone inspired them and indeed conquered Africa for the first time in history and also to be the second country from the Southern part to lift the title after South Africa had won in 1996.

GROUP STAGE
Zambia was paired with Equatorial Guinea, Libya and Senegal in Group A to be precise. The Chipolopolos under the captaincy of Chris Katongo won two matches and drew one in the Group A affair honoured at the Estadio de Bata . They outmaneuvered Senegal by 2-1, drew 2-2 with Libya and inflicted a painful 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea to top the group with seven points plus two goals. All the group matches were played at the Estadio de Bata.

QUARTER FINALS
As usual the competition progresses to the quarter-final stage where Zambia winner of Group A slugged it out with 2nd runner Group B, Sudan played at the El Stadio de Malabo in Equatorial Guinea. Sudan’s hopes were thrashed out as they lost 3 – 0 to the Champions Zambia. Chris Katongo, Chamanga and Sunzu goals did the trick for them.

SEMI FINALS
Nuevo Estadio de Malabo hosted the semi final contest between Zambia and Ghana. After intense aggression from both teams Emmaunel Mayuku’s 78th minute goal separated the men from the boys in favor of the Zambians. Earlier the Black Stars had an opportunity to put their noses in front through a penalty kick, but Asamoah Gyan nicknamed Baby Jet in the football circuit failed to shot his side into the lead when his was scooped away by goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene.

GRAND FINALE
After the men have been deciphered from the boys history was in the making as the Stade d'Angondjé in Libreville, Gabon hosted the Chipolopolo of Zambia and the Crème dela crème Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire in what was termed as an epic showpiece of all time. The final was determined by a penalty shoot out since both teams could not find the back of the net with 120 minutes of soccer fantasy. Zambia defender Sunzu aided his outfits to win the continental wear on 8-7 against Cote D’Ivoire.

THIRD AND FOURTH PLACE
Having beat Mali 2- 0 in all Group D encounter at the counter of Nuevo Estadio de Malabo, Ghana underrated their Malian counterparts as they were paid back in their coin through Cheick Diabete two goals for his side to earn a bronze.

TEAMS KICKED OUT EARLY
Five teams were booted out of the competition early as they failed to lift up to the brim as they lost two matches on a trek in the respective Group matches.  The countries were Senegal, Burkina Faso, Niger, Morocco and Botswana. Others followed after the third round of matches in the group phase.

TOTAL GOALS
Seventy-six goals and average of (2.38 per match) were recorded at the end of the tournament. Group A which comprised of Equatorial Guinea, Champions Zambia, Libya and Senegal in all encounters produced 15 goals. Zambia and co-host progressed to the next stage of the competition.

Group B made up of Cote D’lvoire, Angola, Burkina Faso and Sudan after all three matches also consign to themselves 15 goals apiece. Cote d’lvoire kept a clean sheet in the group stages as they scored nine goals to top the group in terms of points and goals. Cote D’lvoire and Sudan made it to the quarter final stage.

Gabon, Tunisia, Morocco and Niger were in Group C also in totality 15 goals in all three matches each in the said stage. Gabon and Morocco emerged as winners of the group.

A PARLIAMENTARIAN COLOSSUS POPS HIS CLOGS!

By Ebenezer Zor (ezee)
*The Late Henry Ford Kamel.
“Remember that my life is a breath, my eye will never open again to see well. The eye of who sees me will see no more”. Job 7:7-8

Life is full uncertainties, mysteries, pot-holes likewise challenges but death ends it all. Again Ghana has lost another gentleman of the motherland. Mr. Henry  Ford Kamel died at the age of 41.

The death of Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency in Jasikan district of the Volta Region, Mr. Henry Ford Kamel did not only curl my blood up rather thrilled me to the core. Mr Kamal who doubles as the Volta Regional Minister and member of the ruling government National Democratic Congress (NDC) passed away after a short illness last Tuesday.

From all indications, Mr. Kamel born on December 21, 1961 was man worth of his talks and deeds.

His death amid the Christmas festivities has not only whack his household like a storm but the entire nation as well since the country will not get a replace for his stature in the democratically dispensation.

As we enjoy the Christmas mood let’s commemorate his family with a pray of strength, hope, faith, blessings and continuity in every folds of their lives.

Kamal rest awhile, because the anonymous dictum says,” death is not a period- it is only a comma”
                                                     Kamal Hede Nyuiee!
                                                     REST IN PERFECT PEACE.

GLO WEEK 14 KICK START TODAY

  By Ebenezer Zor
With just a match left after this week fixtures to drawn the curtains on the first round leg of the Glo Premiership for 2012/2013 season some teams will continue to build points for a respectable position whiles others struggle to escape from bottom place hence relegation in the 14th week encounters at the various league venues over the weekend.

Two matches will be honoured today.

Bottom place still serving ban of playing home matches away as result of crowd violence in the week five against Medeama, will kick start of the 14th week fixtures as they welcome Christmas Boxing Day team of the week Liberty Professionals to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Saturday. RTU will have to keep themselves above the waters to avoid embarrassment form the scientific soccer lads Liberty who last week annihilated Chelsea by 5-1 at the Dansoman Carl Reindorf Park.

WhileWa All Stars pit against Ashantigold at the Wa Park in the Upper West Region.

Defending champions Kumasi Asante Kotoko having won 3-2 against RTU on Boxing Day will attempt to reciprocate such performance as they play as guest to Alhali Karim Grusah side King Faisal Babies in all Kumasi derby at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Coach Mallam Yaya’s King Faisal drew goalless with Medeama away in the 12th week and for that might go all out for the spoils to better the slot since a loss will automatically slip them down close to the relegation yawning net as they lie tenth with 16 points.

Kokoko who has lost once in this season, fourth on the league log with 22 points and two points gap behind third place Berekum Chelsea out of 13 matches have to fasten their belts against old bogey Faisal.

However matches between both teams have been keenly contested for the exchange of respect, fame, bragging rights and superiority over the other.

Chelsea is yet to recuperate from 5-1 annihilation suffered from Liberty as they come face to face sensational Amidaus Professionals’ at the Golden City Park in match climax as may the best side emerge victorious.

League leaders Aduana Stars will have to embark on journey to play as guest to New Edubiase at the

Gymafi Park in Bekwai. Edubiase with 15 points and 11th on the league standings must win this game to jump from the territory of bottom five for a respectable place before the first round ends. Invariably Aduana Stars will build on their solid work so far in this season for the contention of the trophy. A loss or draw by Aduana if all results being equal will drop them down from the top spot.

Relegation beckoning sides Tema Youth third from the bottom of the ladder with 12 points and Arsenals second from the bottom with nine points will engage in match of their lives at the Tema Park in the 14th week fixture of the Glo premiership. Tema Youth lost 1-0 to  Aduana at Dorman Ahenkro while Arsenal drew 2-2 with Hearts of Oak at the Golden City Park.

Both teams will target a win to build up points before the first round is brought to a halt.

Another relegation and under the cosh team Accra Hearts of Oak fourth from the bottom with 14 points will find unease as they host second place Medeama with 24 points out of matches already played at the Accra Sports Stadium.  Unpromising Hearts drew two all with Arsenals way whereas Medeama were held to a goalless draw by Faisal at home. A win or loss could either favour or disfavor both teams with regards to other results.

At the Robert Mensah Sports Stadium in Cape Coast, Ebusua Dwarfs will host Lions.
